... Once upon a time, around 1988, while riding around on the USS Nassau. We stopped in Hamburg for a little libbo. The Captain bought
a Mercedes 500 SL convertible. It was driven into the hanger deck. And the Air Dept weatherproofed it for the journey home.
We were threatened with bread and water if we got anywhere near the black shrink rapped palletized car.
***
... On my 1st ship (USS Essex LHD-2), headed back to San Diego from Pearl Harbor after a deperming, we loaded up the flight deck,
hanger bay, upper vehicle, lower vehicle and well deck full of cars, boats and a private airplane.. it took 2 days to drive all of them
up the vehicle ramp and get them onloaded..
***
... When we had a family day cruise on the Tarawa, I drove down to San Diego with my wife, daughter and 2 sons of a friend of ours
(one of them is now married to our daughter). Driving that Chrysler LeBaron up the ramp was a lot of fun for everybody, except me
when I heard the car frame scrape the top edge of the ramp.
The car was shackled down to the hangar deck among hundreds of other cars while we had a liesurely cruise back up to Long Beach.
Cars of crewmen were stowed down below on the cargo deck. I took the family down there just to show them where and how the
aircraft elevator fell (among other headaches that ship caused).
... The area you are looking at is where the stern hatch is. It is know as a Freo (Fremantle) Cage. In Fremantle, when the
Nimitz class anchor off the port in an area called Gage Roads, the cage is where the pontoon is tied to, which allows the
Liberty boats to come alongside.
Before the Cage, getting onboard a anchored carrier usually involved a climb up a thirty foot set of stairs up from the
pontoon to the aft Quarterdeck, and if that pontoon was in heavy seas, getting up that stairs was very tricky! The Cage
was introduced in the early 1990's and is now standard on the Nimitz class.
***
... The cages, or bumpers as I call them, went through several iterations before they seem to have been standardized now.
There is a platform inside on the bottom, between the outer cage and the hull, with vertical ladders on the sides.
There is also a full man size hatch in the center of the stern with a small stair up to it.
Boats or barges can tie up to the bumper.
